Charles-Pugh
I am so happy that Former FOX-2 News Anchor Charles Pugh has been elected to Detroit’s City Council. Not only is he the first “out” gay to be on the council, but his integrity and his sacfrice shows his investment in the change for the city of Detroit. I definitely know that he will help drive the city in a new direction, but will he tackle gay rights? I don’t know. I recently read a editorial by Bankole Thompson of the Michigan Chronicle who compared Pugh to Frederick Douglass. He referenced a Douglass quote that read “A man’s character always takes it hue, more or less, from the form and color things about him” . He used the quote to urge Pugh to “heed the wise words from a man whose work on the greater questions of justice and equality have helped to inform the black struggle for more than a century”.
Will Pugh take his new position to help lobby for Gay rights? Only time will tell. Right now the city is struggling on too many other issues for the “gay” issue to take center stage. All we can say now is that what Pugh does in office, will change views (hopefully) of Gays in the Detroit community.
Check out the interview from WXYZ with Pugh below, to learn more about his philosophy.
